About

Rydberg Technologies is a quantum sensing company that specializes in quantum measurement and imaging using Rydberg atoms. Founded in 2015 by Dr. David A. Anderson in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the company leverages quantum mechanics to reinvent sensing capabilities for commercial, government, and defense industries.

Rydberg atom technology uses the quantum properties of atoms with a single quasi-free electron to detect electromagnetic signals across an unprecedented frequency range from DC to THz. These ultra-sensitive electric field detectors offer capabilities impossible with conventional antenna technology.

Rydberg Technologies is one of eight industry and university research teams selected by DARPA for its Science of Atomic Vapors for New Technologies (SAVaNT) program, which is driving fundamental advances to push Rydberg sensor sensitivity closer to quantum limits. The company also participates in DARPA's EQSTRA (Enhancing Quantum Sensor Technologies with Rydberg Atoms) and Quantum Apertures programs.

Over eight years, Rydberg Technologies has miniaturized their sensors from refrigerator-sized devices (2018) to briefcase-sized units, demonstrating practical engineering progress toward deployable quantum sensing systems. In October 2025, the company expanded internationally by launching Rydberg Photonics GmbH in Berlin, Germany to advance quantum photonics capabilities.
