About
Sigma-i is a Tokyo-based quantum computing startup founded in 2019 as a spinout from Tohoku University, possessing world-leading quantum annealing technologies and developing solutions using quantum computers with annealing techniques. The company partners with Toppan to advance research on quantum computing technology, focusing on quantum annealing for logistics optimization. In 2021, Sigma-i and Toppan began pilot tests using quantum annealing to increase efficiency for logistics operations from pickup to receipt of goods, aiming to launch logistics DX solutions in 2025. The companies undertake research on overall optimization solutions based on quantum annealing technology for sectors beyond logistics. Sigma-i is part of Japan's growing quantum startup ecosystem, which received major government backing in 2025 with approximately ¥130 billion ($855 million) for quantum research and technology development.
