Logical Qubit Progress Tracker
Track the race to fault-tolerant quantum computing across 0 companies
Key Terms
- PQ - Physical Qubits
- The actual hardware qubits in a quantum processor. These are prone to errors and decoherence - the loss of quantum information due to environmental interference.
- LQ - Logical Qubits
- Error-corrected qubits created by encoding quantum information across multiple physical qubits. One logical qubit typically requires 10-1000+ physical qubits to achieve fault tolerance.
Quantum computers are extremely sensitive to noise and interference, causing qubits to lose their quantum state (decoherence). Quantum Error Correction encodes quantum information across multiple physical qubits to detect and correct errors without destroying the quantum state.
Why It Matters
- Current State: Most quantum computers use "noisy" physical qubits with error rates of 0.1-1%
- The Goal: Fault-tolerant computers need error rates below 0.0001% (10-6)
- The Solution: Logical qubits combine many physical qubits to achieve required error rates
